Grammar Notes
1) Whether you're just beginning to learn Russian or trying to tackle more advanced topics, you may find demonstrative and relative pronouns a little bit tricky. The refrain of this song contains a phrase with a demonstrative pronoun and a relative clause. A function of demonstrative pronoun ‘та‘ is interesting to look at since it serves a function other than demonstrating – it is used to elicit a quality expressed in a demonstrative adjective, i.e. ‘та‘ in the given phrase means “that kind of girl”.
2) Further, I will explain the construction known as a ‘relative clause’. Relative clause constriction is used to combine two sentences: She is that kind of girl. and I should have been [with him] instead of her. Using relative clauses the speaker makes a decision about the importance he ascribes to each part of the sentence. The main clause is more important in the speaker’s mind than is the relative clause. Unlike English, the relative pronoun may never be deleted in Russian. In Russian relative word has adjectival endings and in both English and Russian must stand as close to the beginning of its own clause as possible. However as long as nouns and pronouns in Russian must always come after a governing preposition, the relative word in a given sentence occurs after the preposition ‘вместо’.
3) Yet another sentence ‘Сколько ей - на пенсию пора, или больше?’ points out the need for you to become acutely aware of the information transmitted by grammatical endings.
4) Once again, practical conclusion can be drawn as to the situation regarding stress in the words and stress variants educated speakers consider to be correct. The usage and attitude of educated speakers to the stress variants as well as inferences about a speaker’s social circle are articulated in the third stanza.
