Grammar notes
Conditional constructions in Russian are used: a) to express real conditions that can be met and to describe plausible situation and b) to describe contrary-to-fact (improbable) conditions and to refer to a hypothetical event. Now we focus on (a) class. The subordinate clause which contains the condition, usually introduced by если, as in Если у вас нет собаки, and follows by the clause stating the consequence: ее не отравит сосед. This clause can be introduced by то or тогда: Если у вас нет(у) тети, то вам ее не потерять.

Note the difference in tense usage in English and Russian to describe real conditional situation. In English, the future tense is not permitted in subordinate clauses, while Russian uses all three tenses, depending on the context. Cf.: Если вы будете (future tense) в Москве, пойдите (future tense) в Третьяковскую галерею. English uses the present tense in such clauses.
