Robert Frost famously said 'Poetry is what gets lost in translation', nevertheless
reading, translating and reflecting on poetry is an exquisite pleasure,
and moreover, sometimes, something can be gained in translation.
Admittedly, this project demonstrates that translating poetry is serious business and not to be taken lightly, yet translation of poetry is conceivable. It
was very interesting to see how the choice of a poet and a poem was
made, and it has become apparent that being able to select a poem is an
essential for students' enjoyment of and motivation for reading poetry. Because the poem is very highly compressed, the student wants to
read the poem aloud more than once, moving line by line through it, aim
for more than just a vague impression of the poem, but looking at the
word choice, figuring out what mood is evoked in the poem and how this
is accomplished.
